Doctor Who Series 7 Episode 4 Review ::Spoilers!::

Note: This is my first review and I've decided to go in blind. I'm avoiding twitter and podcasts until this is posted so that my writing isn't tainted by public opinion. I plan to do this with all new/new to me episodes in the future.

The Power of Three

I feel like this was the one episode that no one knew that much about or if the podcast world knew anything they weren't talking. I didn't have a clue, I knew it was about cubes that is all. Then I saw the "next time" trailer at the end of A Town Called Mercy. Oh I got excited quick! I am going to contradict the description of this blog with my next statement but, I was disappointed by Pond Life. It didn't do what it said on the tin. It turned out to be a whole lot of the Doctor talking at full speed which I enjoy and I think I would have enjoyed those 5 mini episodes a lot more if I hadn't been told by the Ponds themselves that it was going to be a peek into their life without the Doctor. So, knowing that I loved the advertised premise of Pond Life, you can imagine how excited I was that we would get a whole episode set in Amy and Rory's house.

The standalone episodes theme was very apparent again with the music, obviously the setting, the style of it all was just neat and not like what we've seen in this series yet. I wish I knew the technical term for this but, I don't so I'll try to describe it, poorly I'm sure, I really liked how they displayed the months. The fact that they matched up with some element of the scene and were cleverly placed. I don't know that just looked pretty awesome to me. Oh that description was awful. Here's a picture, they're worth a thousand words:

The cubes were cool. I loved the "life with the Doctor was like this" stream of clips. As always everyone was gorgeous particularly Karen Gillan even though the only "visual" problem I had with the episode was on her head. Yup, I'm talking about the return of the Pond Life wig. It was only in a couple of brief moments so I won't complain any more about it, I just felt the need to point out that it was noticed.

Amy maturing to the point that she felt able to handle and even enjoy normal, day to day, married life was good character development in my opinion. We all knew Rory would be happy with it from day one but, Amy has seemed so resistant to the idea of slowing down. The struggle of Amy & Rory feeling like they need to choose between life with the Doctor and life without was handled well and I'm glad that it was difficult for both Amy and Rory.

Brian "Diligence" Williams was amazing again. I am so sad that we met him so late in their timeline. His face right before he fell asleep may have been the most adorable thing in the episode. I know Arthur
Weasley was a Gryffindor but, Brian Williams is definitely a Hufflepuff and no that isn't an insult. He is just so loyal and patient. I've heard people say that he's Moffat's Wilf and to that I say, so? Wilf was awesome.

Kate Stewart was brilliant and when the Doctor told her she knew who she was, not gonna lie, I got a
lil choked up. I'm watching Classic Doctor Who and I've grown quite fond of the Brigadier even more now that I'm in the Pertwee era. Learning that he died in the Wedding of River Song and the Doctor's reaction to hearing that news made me a bit sad but, the Doctor talking with his daughter, was just awesome. Not only was she great, she really looked like she could be his daughter. Great job, casting department!

Amy was a bridesmaid at a lesbian wedding! It was so quick you might not have noticed it but, she says to Laura, "It's about time you made an honest woman of her." As a proud supporter of gay rights and the Sister of a lesbian who just got married, bought a house and is expecting her first child, that made me smile. I love that Doctor Who treats this issue in a non-issue sort of way. I don't know if that makes sense but, what I mean is, it wasn't an after school special moment and it never is with this show. It was said exactly like it would've been said to a straight person getting married because it is exactly like that. OK, I'm done. ::steps off soapbox::

(I should structure these things better, eh? Gimme a break, I'm a noob.)

There were so many fun moments in this episode! I loved the Doctor being bored and doing two days worth of chores in an hour, he can come over any time. Well, that is always on the table. I loved the Doctor playing Wii Tennis. Amy's face when the Doctor tells her that he misses them was really cute as was Rory's face after he realizes that she said she wished that she were in her pants surrounded by soldiers. I loved Amy using a defibrillator on the Doctor she looked pretty awesome taking charge in that situation but, that might just be my love for Amy Pond talking. Chibnall seems to think pretty highly of her, that has been apparent in his last two episodes.

The conversation outside the Tower of London was really touching and sincere. I feel like Amy and the Doctor have been having mini moments like that throughout this series but, I enjoyed seeing them hash it all out. I'm sure there were many takes on the The first face this face saw" line, that is a bit of a tongue twister. I also liked the Doctor's argument that he's running to things, not away from them.

All in all, I loved this episode...oh wait! How could I forget, I do have one itty bitty criticism, that last line? "The Power of Three" says Amy Pond in a booming voice...oh boy that was cheesy. OK so as I was saying, I loved it. I'm not afraid to admit that I will cry a lot next week. Not only for the loss of the Ponds but, also no more new Doctor Who until Christmas! Luckily I have plenty of Classic Doctor Who to keep me busy but, still.

Well, I'm sorry if this is really poorly written, I just need to get it out there. As I said, I decided that I would write this and all reviews before looking at twitter or listening to any podcasts and I am going through withdrawals. I'm off to find out what Radio Free Skaro and the Doctor Who Podcast thought of this episode right now.
